Building Better Interfaces: Sneha’s Journey from Bangalore to Aarhus

We spoke with Sneha about moving to Denmark and working in tech engineering in Aarhus. Through our conversation, we learned more about her work with user interface (UI) design in an international company and what it means to be part of a growing and diverse tech community in Denmark’s second-largest city.

When Sneha moved from India to Denmark two and a half years ago, she was looking for more than just a new job. In the early stages of her career, she wanted to escape the crowded city she lived in and find a place where she could grow both professionally and personally.

“I wanted more than just a new role - I needed a space where I could grow personally and professionally”

Today, she’s a UI Engineer at Uber, based in Aarhus, where she’s making a visible impact in the company while building a life in a city that surprised her in many ways.

“Aarhus wasn’t on my radar at first, but it’s become a place where I feel like I truly feel home”

Building Core Systems at Uber

Uber’s Aarhus office focuses on core infrastructure and platform engineering, supporting the reliability and scalability of Uber’s global systems. Although Uber’s consumer services are not currently active in Denmark, the Aarhus site has expanded from 5 to over 150 engineers and plays a central role in developing internal tools and infrastructure - at a scale comparable to major cloud providers.

The office is a key part of Uber’s global engineering organization, contributing to high-performance systems used worldwide. The Aarhus branch is almost entirely focused on software development, playing a central role in the evolution of Uber’s diverse product offerings - from ridesharing to grocery and takeaway delivery.

A UI-First Mindset

With several years of experience in the tech industry, Sneha’s journey began in Bangalore, India, where she worked for Nvidia after completing a degree in computer science. She started out developing software for the healthcare sector — an experience that deeply influenced how she approaches her work today.

“Working in healthcare taught me how important user understanding is. It’s not just code—it’s context”

That mindset led her to specialize in UI engineering, a field she believes is often underestimated.

“UI isn’t just about aesthetics. It’s about building interfaces that actually work for people”

She recalls a time when a minor change led to massive feedback from colleagues using the internal platform she was helping to build.

“Even a small change can shift how people interact with a system. It can force new habits—and that kind of direct impact is what makes this work exciting”

Designing Tools for Engineers

At Uber, Sneha works on building internal tools used by engineers across the company. As part of the Platform Engineering team, her focus is on creating intuitive and efficient user interfaces for complex backend systems. One of her main projects is Route Portal — an internal platform that allows teams at Uber to manage services, users, and resources through a unified interface.

“We’re building tools that engineers use every day. They need to be clear, fast, and flexible”

She also contributes to developing search functionality, capacity management tools, and deployment services — all designed to simplify the work of engineers and help them operate more efficiently.

Why Aarhus?

Choosing Aarhus over larger cities was a conscious decision and she had options in bigger cities, but Aarhus offered something different.

She also quickly came to appreciate the Danish corporate culture. “Back home, mistakes can be scary. Here, they’re part of learning. That shift helped me grow in confidence”

“There’s trust at work here. People assume you’ll get things done, and that makes a huge difference in how you approach your tasks”

Outside of work, she found support in social clubs she attends with colleagues from Uber. “That social connection made a huge difference. It’s not just about finding a job”

But she also sees areas where Aarhus could do more to help newcomers settle in as it can be tough to figure out everyday things - like where to meet people outside work or how to find events and do everyday tasks: “A simple intro guide would go a long way” Sheha says.

Despite those challenges, Sneha has found Aarhus to be a rewarding place to live and work.

This interview is part of our Tech Talent series, where we highlight what it’s like to be part of the tech scene in Aarhus through real stories and experiences.
